The skies were clear and the weather was beautiful on a humid Sunday Afternoon as the leaders teed off at Waialae Country Club for the Final Round of the 2019 Sony Open In Hawaii. Heading into the day Matt Kuchar had a 2 shot lead (192) over Andrew Putnam (194) and a 4 shot lead over Keith Mitchell (196).
However, what didn’t look as great as the blue skies over Oahu was Kuchar’s start as he was in trouble early. After dropping a stroke on 2 with a Bogey, Kuchar regained that shot back on the 3rd hole with a birdie, only to bogey holes 4 and 5. Kuchar would remain at +2 on the day until the 9th hole when he birdied to gain a stroke back, making the turn with a 36.
The final 9 looked to be exciting. As Kuchar was having trouble on the front 9, his playing partner Andrew Putnam turned his game up. Putnam made the turn at -2 (33). Both Putnam and Kuchar were tied for the lead as they teed off on the 10th hole. They traded the lead back and forth until hole 15 when Matt began to run away with the tournament. While Putnam remained at -2 through the day and eventually finished with a 68, Kuchar birdied holes 15, 16, and 18 to finish at -4 on the day (66), winning the 2019 Sony Open In Hawaii by 4 shots over Putnam.
It is Matt Kuchar’s 9th Career PGA TOUR Victory. In addition to the Sony Open Trophy Kuchar takes home $1,152,000 and Sony’s AIBO Robot Dog.
